Daily Grain Network Status – Jan. 31, 2021 FEB 1 2021 | Producers | Blog Post

(Regular updates will be available on the Alberta Pulse Growers website.)

Pulse Canada and the CSCA are partners of the Ag Transport Coalition (ATC)*, which tracks performance of the Canadian railway network for the movement of grain.

A new grain network status report has been created to provide stakeholders with comprehensive insight on the performance of the Canadian rail system for the 2020-2021 grain year.  The report provides information and data on the status of the rail network as of midnight the previous day.

The railway performance data reported in these reports reflect the performance of rail shipments specifically for grain shippers participating in the Ag Transport Coalition’s railway performance measurement program – estimated to encompass approximately 90-95% of western Canadian originated grain shipments by rail.

January 31, 2021: Report Synopsis

Loads on Wheels

· Average daily loads on wheels finished out last week consistent with the trend of declining volumes seen throughout much of the week.  Loads on wheels averaged fewer than 11,000 cars per day for the first time in several months.

· This trajectory has reversed somewhat in the last few days as system counts have now increased for four straight days on the heels of 8 consecutive days of decline.

Cars Not Moving

· Average daily counts of loads not moving bumped up 25% last week at more than 2,800 cars per day on average.  Despite the week over week increase, counts remained at the second lowest level in more than two months.

Port Unloads

· West coast unloads declined slightly last week reflecting slightly lower unloads at Vancouver and somewhat higher unloads at Prince Rupert with the Port averaging 200+ unloads per day for the first time in three weeks.
