Daily Grain Network Status – December 7, 2021 DEC 8 2021 | Producers | Blog Post

(Regular updates will be available on the Alberta Pulse Growers website.)

Pulse Canada and the CSCA are partners of the Ag Transport Coalition (ATC)*, which tracks performance of the Canadian railway network for the movement of grain.

A new grain network status report has been created to provide stakeholders with comprehensive insight on the performance of the Canadian rail system for the 2020-2021 grain year. The report provides information and data on the status of the rail network as of midnight the previous day.

The railway performance data reported in these reports reflect the performance of rail shipments specifically for grain shippers participating in the Ag Transport Coalition’s railway performance measurement program – estimated to encompass approximately 90-95% of western Canadian originated grain shipments by rail.

December 7, 2021: Report Synopsis

Loads on Wheels

System loads on wheels increased nominally yesterday and continue to hover around the 8,000 car threshold.

While flat on a net basis, yesterday’s change reflects a slight increase for CN offset in nearly equal measure by a reduction on CP.

Cars Not Moving

System idle car counts continue to show progress declining for the 4th straight day and falling below the 3,000 car mark for the first time since November 16.

The improvement seen yesterday reflects lower counts for both railways led by CN with a significant reduction in the Vancouver corridor.

Port Unloads

West coast unloads (470) took a slight step back reflecting lower unloads at Vancouver.

Thunder Bay unloads (228) saw their best day so far this week but still fell short of 250 cars and currently tracking 50% lower than last week.
