Daily Grain Network Status – September 11, 2022 SEP 13 2022 | Producers | Blog Post

(Regular updates will be available on the Alberta Pulse Growers website.)

Pulse Canada and the CSCA are partners of the Ag Transport Coalition (ATC)*, which tracks performance of the Canadian railway network for the movement of grain.

A new grain network status report has been created to provide stakeholders with comprehensive insight on the performance of the Canadian rail system for the 2020-2021 grain year. The report provides information and data on the status of the rail network as of midnight the previous day.

The railway performance data reported in these reports reflect the performance of rail shipments specifically for grain shippers participating in the Ag Transport Coalition’s railway performance measurement program – estimated to encompass approximately 90-95% of western Canadian originated grain shipments by rail.

September 11, 2022: Report Synopsis

Loads on Wheels

System volumes took a significant jump late last week with loads on wheels rising as high as 9,000 cars on Saturday driving average daily volumes north of 6,400 cars last week – an 18% jump from the prior week.  Both railways with higher volumes last week although more notably CN which saw a 40% increase from the prior week.
With demand data indicating shipper demand rising to 12,000+ cars this week we expect loads on wheels to remain high.
Cars Not Moving

A second straight week of improvement in system idle car counts last week with average daily counts falling below 600 cars for the first time in more than four months.

CP drove the improvement last week while CN counts rose slightly.

Port Unloads

West coast unloads averaged 600 cars per day last week – the best week in months – driven principally by strong unloads at Vancouver.
Thunder Bay unloads improved week over week at 140 cars per day last week – the best week seen in the last six.
