Daily Grain Network Status – January 30, 2023 JAN 31 2023 | Producers | Blog Post

(Regular updates will be available on the Alberta Pulse Growers website.)

Pulse Canada and the CSCA are partners of the Ag Transport Coalition (ATC)*, which tracks performance of the Canadian railway network for the movement of grain.

A new grain network status report has been created to provide stakeholders with comprehensive insight on the performance of the Canadian rail system for the 2020-2021 grain year. The report provides information and data on the status of the rail network as of midnight the previous day.

The railway performance data reported in these reports reflect the performance of rail shipments specifically for grain shippers participating in the Ag Transport Coalition’s railway performance measurement program – estimated to encompass approximately 90-95% of western Canadian originated grain shipments by rail.

January 30, 2023: Report Synopsis

Loads on Wheels

A second consecutive day of decline in system loads on wheels yesterday falling below 8,200 cars – the lowest one day total in more than four months.
Both railways seeing declines yesterday although more notably CN which has now seen loads on wheels fall below 4,000 cars.

Cars Not Moving

Little change in system idle car counts yesterday remaining north of 2,100 cars.  We note that delayed reporting overstated CP counts in yesterday’s report by roughly 100 cars.

CN counts increasing yesterday offset in part by lower counts for CP.

Port Unloads

West coast unloads (1,006) still north of 1,000 cars yesterday although at their lowest level in a week with little change at Vancouver and lower unloads at Prince Rupert as anticipated.

Thunder Bay unloads (53) continue to trickle in on a daily basis.
