Daily Grain Network Status – April 30, 2023 MAY 1 2023 | Producers | Blog Post

(Regular updates will be available on the Alberta Pulse Growers website.)

Pulse Canada and the CSCA are partners of the Ag Transport Coalition (ATC)*, which tracks performance of the Canadian railway network for the movement of grain.

A new grain network status report has been created to provide stakeholders with comprehensive insight on the performance of the Canadian rail system for the 2020-2021 grain year. The report provides information and data on the status of the rail network as of midnight the previous day.

The railway performance data reported in these reports reflect the performance of rail shipments specifically for grain shippers participating in the Ag Transport Coalition’s railway performance measurement program – estimated to encompass approximately 90-95% of western Canadian originated grain shipments by rail.

April 30, 2023: Report Synopsis

Loads on Wheels

An uptick in volumes on the weekend reversed the trend seen through much of last week leading to a week over week increase in average daily loads on wheels at 8,100 cars per day – 4% higher than the prior week.

The increase seen last week was driven solely by higher volumes on CP (+10%) while CN loads on wheels declined week over week (-9%).

Cars Not Moving

A modest increase last week in the number of cars dwelling 48+ hours on a daily basis at slightly more than 1,000 cars per day.

CN seeing slightly higher counts last week while CP saw some improvement.

Port Unloads

West coast unloads averaged 848 cars per day last week, a slight decline from the prior week reflecting lower unloads at Vancouver.

Thunder Bay unloads at more than 300 cars per day last week saw their second best week of the current season.
