Daily Grain Network Status – November 20, 2023 NOV 21 2023 | Producers | Blog Post
(Regular updates will be available on the Alberta Pulse Growers website.)
Pulse Canada and the CSCA are partners of the Ag Transport Coalition (ATC)*, which tracks performance of the Canadian railway network for the movement of grain.
A new grain network status report has been created to provide stakeholders with comprehensive insight on the performance of the Canadian rail system for the 2020-2021 grain year. The report provides information and data on the status of the rail network as of midnight the previous day.
The railway performance data reported in these reports reflect the performance of rail shipments specifically for grain shippers participating in the Ag Transport Coalition’s railway performance measurement program – estimated to encompass approximately 90-95% of western Canadian originated grain shipments by rail.
November 20, 2023: Report Synopsis
Loads on Wheels
A second straight day of notable decline in system loads on wheels yesterday falling below 8,800 cars and down 10% over the last 48 hours.
Both railways seeing declines yesterday, more notably CP, with each now pushing toward the 4,000 car mark consistent with the projected decline in demand this week.
Cars Not Moving
Some notable improvement in the number of cars not moving 48+ hours yesterday, declining by a third and back below the 1,400 car mark after surpassing 2,000 cars a day ago.
Improvement across the board with CN and CP each seeing significant improvement in nearly equal measure.
Port Unloads
West coast unloads (1,044) significantly higher than in recent days although we suspect Prince Rupert unloads reflect late reporting for previously unloads cars.
Thunder Bay unloads (383) with their best day in more than month consistent with the building inventory of cars on hand over the last few days.
