Daily Grain Network Status – December 1, 2021 DEC 2 2021 | Producers | Blog Post

(Regular updates will be available on the Alberta Pulse Growers website.)

Pulse Canada and the CSCA are partners of the Ag Transport Coalition (ATC)*, which tracks performance of the Canadian railway network for the movement of grain.

A new grain network status report has been created to provide stakeholders with comprehensive insight on the performance of the Canadian rail system for the 2020-2021 grain year. The report provides information and data on the status of the rail network as of midnight the previous day.

The railway performance data reported in these reports reflect the performance of rail shipments specifically for grain shippers participating in the Ag Transport Coalition’s railway performance measurement program – estimated to encompass approximately 90-95% of western Canadian originated grain shipments by rail.

December 1, 2021: Report Synopsis

Loads on Wheels

System loads on wheels dropped off slightly yesterday reflecting modest declines for each of CN and CP.

The decline for both railways yesterday reflects marginally higher volumes in the Vancouver corridor offset by nominal improvements across most other corridors.

Cars Not Moving

A quick turnaround from the increase seen in idle car counts the prior day with counts declining 10% yesterday reflecting improvements for each of CN and CP.

Yesterday’s turn saw counts dip just below the 4,000 car mark for only the second time in nearly three weeks.

Port Unloads

West coast unloads (320) declined yesterday with unloads at Vancouver declining by half while Prince Rupert unloads increased slightly.

Thunder Bay unloads (387) above the 300 car threshold for the 3rd straight day yesterday and currently tracking roughly at last week’s pace.
