Daily Grain Network Status – December 5, 2021 DEC 6 2021 | Producers | Blog Post

(Regular updates will be available on the Alberta Pulse Growers website.)

Pulse Canada and the CSCA are partners of the Ag Transport Coalition (ATC)*, which tracks performance of the Canadian railway network for the movement of grain.

A new grain network status report has been created to provide stakeholders with comprehensive insight on the performance of the Canadian rail system for the 2020-2021 grain year. The report provides information and data on the status of the rail network as of midnight the previous day.

The railway performance data reported in these reports reflect the performance of rail shipments specifically for grain shippers participating in the Ag Transport Coalition’s railway performance measurement program – estimated to encompass approximately 90-95% of western Canadian originated grain shipments by rail.

December 5, 2021: Report Synopsis

Loads on Wheels

System loads on wheels finished out week 18 consistent with the trend seen throughout the week averaging 8,400 cars per day.

Loads on wheels have now declined for three straight days and currently sit just above 8,000 cars reflecting declines for both CN and CP in the last 72 hours.

Cars Not Moving

Average daily system idle car counts showed week over week improvement last week falling to slightly more than 4,000 cars per day – 15% lower than the prior week.

Counts have now declined for two straight days for both railways and we begin week 19 below the 3,800 car mark – the lowest level in 3+ weeks.

Port Unloads

West coast unloads, while still very low, doubled from the prior week averaging 200 cars per day last week driven wholly by improved unloads at Vancouver.

Thunder Bay unloads also saw a slight week over week bump averaging 280 cars per day last week.
