Pulse Canada and the CSCA are partners of the Ag Transport Coalition (ATC)*, which tracks performance of the Canadian railway network for the movement of grain.

A new grain network status report has been created to provide stakeholders with comprehensive insight on the performance of the Canadian rail system for the 2020-2021 grain year. The report provides information and data on the status of the rail network as of midnight the previous day.

The railway performance data reported in these reports reflect the performance of rail shipments specifically for grain shippers participating in the Ag Transport Coalition’s railway performance measurement program – estimated to encompass approximately 90-95% of western Canadian originated grain shipments by rail.

January 12, 2023: Report Synopsis

Loads on Wheels

System loads on wheels continue to bounce around on a daily basis although remaining range bound between 8,700 – 9,200 cars per day this week.

A down day yesterday with loads on wheels declining 5% with both railways seeing lower volumes led by CN.

Cars Not Moving

A quick reversal in system idle car counts yesterday following the notable increase seen on CP the prior day. System totals now back to slightly more than 1,200 cars.

Reversing the increase seen the prior day, CP saw counts decline 40% yesterday with little change seen for CN.

Port Unloads

West coast unloads (1,021) seeing some improvement from the prior day with improved unloads at Vancouver and little change seen at Prince Rupert.

Thunder Bay unloads (1) continue to decline consistent with a wind down of operations.
