Daily Grain Network Status – April 10, 2023 APR 11 2023 | Producers | Blog Post

(Regular updates will be available on the Alberta Pulse Growers website.)

Pulse Canada and the CSCA are partners of the Ag Transport Coalition (ATC)*, which tracks performance of the Canadian railway network for the movement of grain.

A new grain network status report has been created to provide stakeholders with comprehensive insight on the performance of the Canadian rail system for the 2020-2021 grain year. The report provides information and data on the status of the rail network as of midnight the previous day.

The railway performance data reported in these reports reflect the performance of rail shipments specifically for grain shippers participating in the Ag Transport Coalition’s railway performance measurement program – estimated to encompass approximately 90-95% of western Canadian originated grain shipments by rail.

April 10, 2023: Report Synopsis

Loads on Wheels

A slight uptick in system loads on wheels yesterday pushing back near 9,500 cars.

All of the increase seen yesterday reflects higher loads on wheels for CN specifically in the Prince Rupert and Vancouver corridors.

Some positive movement in system idle car counts yesterday after seeing counts balloon to almost 2,500 cars a day ago.  Despite the improvement system counts remain above the 2,000 car threshold.

Improvement seen across the board yesterday although CP accounting for nearly 90% of the overall improvement.

Port Unloads

West coast unloads (915) bouncing back somewhat yesterday reflecting improved unloads reported at Vancouver.

Thunder Bay unloads (224) dipping somewhat yesterday from the strong performance seen in recent days – below the 300 car mark for the first time in seven days.
