Daily Grain Network Status – Dec. 7, 2020 DEC 8 2020 | Producers | Blog Post

(Regular updates will be available on the Alberta Pulse Growers website.)

Pulse Canada and the CSCA are partners of the Ag Transport Coalition (ATC)*, which tracks performance of the Canadian railway network for the movement of grain.

A new grain network status report has been created to provide stakeholders with comprehensive insight on the performance of the Canadian rail system for the 2020-2021 grain year.  The report provides information and data on the status of the rail network as of midnight the previous day.

The railway performance data reported in these reports reflect the performance of rail shipments specifically for grain shippers participating in the Ag Transport Coalition’s railway performance measurement program – estimated to encompass approximately 90-95% of western Canadian originated grain shipments by rail.

December 7, 2020: Report Synopsis

Loads on Wheels

· Loads on wheels increased yesterday, remaining above 13,000 cars for the fourth consecutive day.  Early in the week, volumes are tracking some 2% ahead of last week at this juncture, reflecting higher volumes on CN, offset by lower volumes on CP.  Yesterday’s change saw an increase for CP and a slight decline for CN whose volumes have now been above the 7,000 car mark for 8 of the last 11 days.

Cars Not Moving

· The system count of loads not moving increased for the third straight day surpassing 2,900 cars on a system basis.  The upward trend seen over the last few days reverses gains made late last week when counts had declined to approximately 2,000 cars from an intra week high of more than 3,000 cars.  Since then, counts have increased nearly 50% reflecting higher counts for both railways.

Port Unloads

· West coast unloads (1,148) declined slightly yesterday reflecting lower reported unloads at Vancouver while Prince Rupert saw some improvement.  Thunder Bay returned to form with more than 450 unloads yesterday.
