Daily Grain Network Status – Dec. 8, 2020 DEC 9 2020 | Producers | Blog Post

(Regular updates will be available on the Alberta Pulse Growers website.)

Pulse Canada and the CSCA are partners of the Ag Transport Coalition (ATC)*, which tracks performance of the Canadian railway network for the movement of grain.

A new grain network status report has been created to provide stakeholders with comprehensive insight on the performance of the Canadian rail system for the 2020-2021 grain year.  The report provides information and data on the status of the rail network as of midnight the previous day.

The railway performance data reported in these reports reflect the performance of rail shipments specifically for grain shippers participating in the Ag Transport Coalition’s railway performance measurement program – estimated to encompass approximately 90-95% of western Canadian originated grain shipments by rail.

December 8, 2020: Report Synopsis

Loads on Wheels

· Loads on wheels declined yesterday but remained above 13,500 cars for the fourth consecutive day.  Early in the week volumes continue to track 4% ahead of last week at this juncture, reflecting higher volumes on CN offset by lower volumes on CP.  Yesterday’s change saw a nominal increase for CN offset by a significant decline (-8%) on CP resulting in the net system decline in loads on wheels.

Cars Not Moving

· The system count of loads not moving increased for the fourth straight day surpassing 3,200 cars on a system basis.  The continued upward trajectory is a direct reflection of increasing counts on CN over the last four days while CP counts have been flat to marginally lower over the time period.

Port Unloads

· West coast unloads (1,104) declined slightly yesterday reflecting improved unloads at Vancouver while Prince Rupert unloads fell off significantly.  Thunder Bay had another good day at more than 350 reported unloads yesterday.
