Daily Grain Network Status – Dec. 9, 2020 DEC 10 2020 | Producers | Blog Post

(Regular updates will be available on the Alberta Pulse Growers website.)

Pulse Canada and the CSCA are partners of the Ag Transport Coalition (ATC)*, which tracks performance of the Canadian railway network for the movement of grain.

A new grain network status report has been created to provide stakeholders with comprehensive insight on the performance of the Canadian rail system for the 2020-2021 grain year.  The report provides information and data on the status of the rail network as of midnight the previous day.

The railway performance data reported in these reports reflect the performance of rail shipments specifically for grain shippers participating in the Ag Transport Coalition’s railway performance measurement program – estimated to encompass approximately 90-95% of western Canadian originated grain shipments by rail.

December 9, 2020: Report Synopsis

Loads on Wheels

· Loads on wheels declined yesterday for the second consecutive day but remained above the 13,000 car threshold for the 6th straight day.  At this week’s midpoint, daily volume levels continue to track 6% higher than at this point last week, averaging 13,600 cars on line per day.  While CP volumes are essentially flat week over week, CN volumes are tracking some 13% higher at more than 7,800 cars on line per day.

Cars Not Moving

· The system count of loads not moving increased for the 5th straight day, albeit only slightly, remaining above 3,200 cars on a system basis.  The continued upward trajectory continues to reflect increasing counts on CN while CP counts have trended steadily downward over the last three days.

Port Unloads

· West coast unloads (1,277) improved yesterday reflecting little change at Vancouver but significant improvement at Prince Rupert.  Thunder Bay saw its lowest daily unloads reported in a number of weeks at fewer than 200 yesterday.
