Daily Grain Network Status – February 24, 2022 FEB 25 2022 | Producers | Blog Post

(Regular updates will be available on the Alberta Pulse Growers website.)

Pulse Canada and the CSCA are partners of the Ag Transport Coalition (ATC)*, which tracks performance of the Canadian railway network for the movement of grain.

A new grain network status report has been created to provide stakeholders with comprehensive insight on the performance of the Canadian rail system for the 2020-2021 grain year. The report provides information and data on the status of the rail network as of midnight the previous day.

The railway performance data reported in these reports reflect the performance of rail shipments specifically for grain shippers participating in the Ag Transport Coalition’s railway performance measurement program – estimated to encompass approximately 90-95% of western Canadian originated grain shipments by rail.

February 24, 2022: Report Synopsis

Loads on Wheels

System loads on wheels increased slightly yesterday returning above the 5,500 car threshold and continuing to lag last week by some 6% as we near the end of week 30.

In a reversal from the prior day CN led the upside yesterday with cars on line jumping 20% to return above 3,000 cars. CP volumes declined yesterday pushing loads on wheels below 2,000 cars.

Cars Not Moving

After a brief uptick the prior day system idle car counts resumed their downward trajectory yesterday declining nearly 20% to once again fall below 1,600 cars.

Both railways saw counts improve yesterday with CN counts declining 2:1 as compared to CP.

Port Unloads

West coast unloads (375) improved yesterday after a notably down day the previous day.

The improvement yesterday reflects improved unloads at Vancouver, albeit still low at less than 400 cars, and no unloads at Prince Rupert as anticipated.
