Daily Grain Network Status – March 8, 2023 MAR 9 2023 | Producers | Blog Post

(Regular updates will be available on the Alberta Pulse Growers website.)

Pulse Canada and the CSCA are partners of the Ag Transport Coalition (ATC)*, which tracks performance of the Canadian railway network for the movement of grain.

A new grain network status report has been created to provide stakeholders with comprehensive insight on the performance of the Canadian rail system for the 2020-2021 grain year. The report provides information and data on the status of the rail network as of midnight the previous day.

The railway performance data reported in these reports reflect the performance of rail shipments specifically for grain shippers participating in the Ag Transport Coalition’s railway performance measurement program – estimated to encompass approximately 90-95% of western Canadian originated grain shipments by rail.

March 8, 2023: Report Synopsis

Loads on Wheels

A modest decline in system loads on wheels yesterday falling to slightly more than 9,500 cars but remaining above the 9,000 car threshold for the 10th straight day.

A tale of two railways yesterday with CN leading the decline while CP numbers held steady.

Cars Not Moving

More progress on the system idle car front yesterday with system counts dipping below the 1,000 car threshold for the first time in 10 days and only the second time in three weeks.

Some improvement seen for both CN and CP yesterday although once again more notably CP which saw counts fall below the 700 car threshold – the lowest one day total in 10 days.

Port Unloads

West coast unloads (805) down 30% from the prior day reflecting significantly lower unloads at Vancouver (-38%).

Prince Rupert unloads improving yesterday largely as expected given the inbound lineup yesterday.
